Welcome to Flutterbye – Join the Conversation

November 5, 2016 Posted by Christine 14 Comments

For over ten years now I’ve had the absolute pleasure of working in Volunteer Management across the not-for-profit and local government sectors. Working alongside volunteers who are passionate for the cause; whatever that may be, has been a constant source of inspiration for me.

I have now decided to launch Flutterbye, a blog where I plan to write about Volunteer Management with a focus on ‘sustainable volunteerism’. I see this as a key challenge facing organisations who have a volunteer base due to changes in the economic climate and the need for the donated, public and corporate dollar to have a greater return on investment. I have a strong interest in continuous improvement and change management and will be exploring practical methods to applying these principles to the management of volunteers.

Through this blog I hope to raise the profile of the often misunderstood and vital profession of Volunteer Management and to share my knowledge and experience with others who lead volunteers.

Today, November 5th is International Volunteer Managers Day and it seemed fitting to publish Flutterbye’s first blog post on a day that celebrates the profession of volunteer leadership. This years theme for IVMD is ‘Volunteer Management. One Job. Many Hats’.

On any given day a Volunteer Manager could be interviewing and recruiting, developing and delivering training, creating rosters, coordinating an event, running a risk workshop, drafting Board papers, project managing a volunteer program, drafting communications, managing sensitive issues and resolving conflict between volunteers. Everyday is different with a new set of challenges but it is also a deeply rewarding role as we see first hand the positive outcomes achieved by our volunteers and the satisfaction this brings them.

I hope you will join me in celebrating volunteers and the Volunteer Managers who dedicate their time to provide a supportive and engaging environment that enables volunteers to do their best work. I look forward to you being a part of the Flutterbye conversation.

Christine

Thank you for taking the time to create and share the Flutterbye Blog. It is always good to have a perspective from a successful volunteer manager. Despite being so far apart in miles (I’m in Sarasota, Florida, USA), I realize that volunteer managers across the globe share similar dreams and challenges. I signed up and look forward to receiving your emails.

Thank you for some great ideas, Christine. I work for a small non-profit, and as our local employment is high, I am unable to recruit many community volunteers. I’m happy employment has dramatically improved, sad that it reduces our available volunteer pool!

I’d love to receive your emails, and I look forward to future blog entries. Thank you for your intelligent creativity!

Sandie, if jobs have been created, maybe it would help to engage “corporate” volunteers; organizations that encourage their employees to give of their time? Some even pay their employees to volunteer a certain number of hours.

        An excellent suggestion Missy!
Sandie, do you have a local volunteer resource centre or peak body you could contact to find out which organisations have a corporate volunteering program?

Thanks for sharing your ideas about volunteer management! I have been a Volunteer Coordinator for almost 2 years now, and before acquiring the job, I had never heard of such a position. So, needless to say, I am still learning about all that the job entails. A blog like this will be of great value!

      Hi Lori
I couldn’t agree more with you about volunteer management having many facets. HR, event management, conflict management, relationship building, change management and project management are just a few of the many hats we wear on any given day.
