Better systems. Stronger volunteer experiences. More community impact.

About Flutterbye

We support volunteer-involving organisations to use their time, and resources more effectively, while strengthening compliance with the National Standards. We do not just improve systems or volunteer programs; we work alongside your team to build the capability to keep improving long after we leave.

Clients describe this as knowing they are in good hands, avoiding costly mistakes, turning complex problems into something structured and workable, and building volunteer programs that stand up over time.

Christine brings clarity, structure, and a genuine understanding of how systems should support people, not slow them down. Her work has made a lasting difference to how we operate.

Client — Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation

We avoided an unnecessary software switch, accelerated improvements across multiple management areas, and built internal capability that will serve us well beyond the project.

Client — Auckland War Memorial Museum

We bring together more than two decades of industry experience and seven years of consulting experience to translate complex systems into clear, practical steps that improve your volunteer program. The work begins with an audit of your systems and programs and consulting with your people, so we can build an improvement pathway that is specific to your organisation.

From there, we deliver clear reports, practical tools, targeted training and the capability your team needs to sustain the work. Whether the project is a Better Impact system review, National Standards audit, stakeholder engagement process or strategic advice, the work is designed to meet your organisation’s needs and support practical action.

To date, we have worked with more than 55 organisations, from small community groups through to local and state government departments, not-for-profits, state peak bodies and government-commissioned strategy projects.

Less risk. Better volunteer experiences.
Stronger retention. More capacity to deliver.

These are the outcomes we build together. We focus on the internal changes that hold, so your program keeps delivering the community impact you’re here to create.

Our story

If your organisation involves volunteers, you already know how much rides on getting the program right. Recruitment, retention, safety, engagement: each one shapes the experience volunteers have and the impact they make. Flutterbye helps you get it right.

What started in 2016 as a volunteer management blog grew into a consultancy after readers kept asking the same question. Can you help us actually do this? The answer was yes then. It still is now.

Flutterbye’s name and logo draw inspiration from the humble butterfly. Small acts by individual volunteers add up to immeasurable benefits for the community, an example of the butterfly effect.  Likewise, small, deliberate changes to a volunteer program can ripple into something much bigger: stronger retention, safer programs, more engaged volunteers and real outcomes for the community. The butterfly effect, applied to volunteering.

And the name itself; Christine’s two year old daughter couldn’t pronounce butterfly correctly and instead said Flutterbye

Results

Less risk. Stronger volunteer experiences. Better retention. More capacity to deliver.

We work with volunteer-involving organisations to use their time and resources more effectively and strengthen compliance with the National Standards for Volunteer Involvement.

Complex volunteer management challenges become structured and workable. Costly mistakes get caught before they land. Programs get built
to last.

Clients describe knowing they are in good hands. Most return for a second or third engagement. That repeat rate tells you what works.

These are the outcomes we build together, so your program keeps delivering the community impact you are here to create.

Experience

We bring more than two decades of volunteering sector experience and seven years of volunteer management consulting to every project. The result is practical advice that strengthens your volunteer program, not
just your documentation.

To date, we have worked with more than 55 organisations across Australia and New Zealand: small community groups, local and state government departments, not-for-profits, state peak bodies and government-commissioned strategy projects.

Christine is an independent Better Impact Certified Consultant, one of a small number across Australia and New Zealand. That means deep experience in volunteer management software reviews, system configuration and team training.

Christine has keynoted at Volunteering Victoria and Volunteering New Zealand conferences and contributed to global sector publications, including
Engage Journal.

Whether the project is a Better Impact software review, National Standards audit, stakeholder engagement process or strategic volunteer management advice, the work is designed for practical action.

When we walk into your organisation, we have seen your problem before. More than once.

Care

Christine left a graphic design career at 25 after a month volunteering with disadvantaged children in Thailand. She came home committed to this work and has been in the volunteering sector ever since.

That is not a career pivot story. It is a values story.

She still volunteers today. Plasma through Red Cross. Time at her children’s school. Volunteer engagement is not something Christine consults on from the outside. It is who she is.

When we sit with your team, we are not just solving a volunteer management problem. We are thinking about the volunteers whose experience depends on getting this right. We are thinking about the coordinator who keeps showing up even when the system makes it harder than it needs to be. And we think about the community impact when volunteer programs are run the way they should be.

That is why the structure we build does not leave when we do.

Your volunteering expert

Meet our Director

Hello, I’m Christine Spiers, a Volunteer Engagement Strategist based in Melbourne. For more than 20 years I have designed, led and improved volunteer programs across not-for-profit organisations and local government.

I hold a rare set of qualifications for this field: Certified in Volunteer Administration (CVA), Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, Certified Practising Change Manager (Prosci), Certificate of Engagement (IAP2), Training and Assessment and I am an independent Certified Better Impact Consultant.

What that means for you: I bring both the evidence base and the lived experience of actually running volunteer programs. You bring the knowledge of your community and your team. Together we build something that holds.

If you’re stuck on a volunteering challenge, planning a review or quietly wondering whether your program is working the way it should, get in touch. The first conversation costs nothing and often shifts the thinking before any work begins. Let’s connect.
